Proptober Day 24 - Create a Tutorial
Jennifer Belgin

On the 9th day of Proptober I asked you to find a tutorial for a new skill and share it with others. Today I am challenging you to make a tutorial of your own! It can be photos, text, a quick snippet, or a fully edited video. If you've already made one, feel free to share that instead. So much of what I have learned over the years has been splicing together techniques I've picked up from other makers and blending them with my own, so the value of these tutorials is really priceless. I've included a video and text-based...

Proptober Day 23 - Sculpt
Jennifer Belgin

While many people are now using 3D printers to make quickly reproducible pieces, not everyone has a printer or knows how to model. It's also relatively expensive to hire someone to do either for you. Sometimes you just have to make what you need to finish a piece and sculpting is really the best way to do so. There's also something to be said for digging your fingers into Monster Clay or Sculpey and bringing something to life! It's not always about making an entire piece, either. I use Apoxie Sculpt on a regular basis to fill gaps or finish pieces...

Proptober Day 22 - Product Photo
Jennifer Belgin

In a world where imagery rules social media it's not surprising that quality photos can have a huge impact on product sales or the reach of your item share. I personally have seen a substantial impact on my daily site visits and sales when I combine interesting photos with the right hashtags. So today's challenge is to practice doing some "product photos" for something you've made. Think about lighting, backgrounds, text, and anything else you may need to add to make something buyable or shareable. I don't have the means to hire a professional or use a professional camera to...

Proptober Day 21 - Make It Go
Jennifer Belgin

Remote control things have never been of particular interest to me until I saw Angry Dog Studios Gizmo this year at DragonCon. I saw Gremlins at the drive-in as a kid and had several plush and plastic versions, but never this. I had hoped to create a close-enough version for myself but won't get it done today. It's a definite must, though! His Gizmo is featured below with MKY-MSE-17, also a hand built mouse droid by A Doom for Clankers. If mogawai's aren't your thing there are plenty of other options. Perhaps a DRD from Farscape? Or perhaps you want...

Proptober Day 20 - Blueprint
Jennifer Belgin

A few years ago I discovered Volpin Props and the amazing blueprints he's done of some of his builds. A bit later I discovered those put out by Punished Props as well as a handful of other makers on Etsy who sell them to allow you to create your own scale builds. After all this time, I still haven't created my own so it seemed a fitting challenge. There are any number of free or paid programs available to do this and I've linked one below. However, I'm going to be using the tutorial from Alvaro Guzman to use Photoshop...

Proptober Day 19 - Unconventional Challenge
Jennifer Belgin

A few years ago a friend came to me with a request to make the instrument for his Bith costume as this wasn't the kind of thing your average costume shop had available. To date, it's one of the weirdest and most fun builds I've done and it's made entirely of things not meant for these purposes. Perhaps this will help people understand why I have multiple bins of weird odds and ends that I can't make myself throw away! I think the most fun, honestly, was wandering through Home Depot looking for just the right thing, and continually being...
