Proptober Day 27 - Foam
Jennifer Belgin

Foam! Foam! Foam! If you have not played around with this amazing material here's your chance. Foam is so incredibly affordable and you can make just about anything with it. It would take me days to even begin to scratch the surface of the tutorials dedicated to foam craft, but I feel you're cheating yourself if you don't give it a try at some point. If you are looking for some solid instruction, I can't recommend Punished Props highly enough. Their Foamsmith Trilogy is my go to, and their tutorials are top notch. My first "Wow!" foam moment was with...

Proptober Day 26 - Wire
Jennifer Belgin

I really enjoyed Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them despite the very different feel from the other Potter films and it was hard not to fall a little bit in love with the shy and sweet Bowtruckle. I was gifted an amazing hand-made version at DragonCon this year so it seems a great project for the "wire" portion of Proptober.

Proptober Day 25 - Light It Up
Jennifer Belgin

A few years back there was a trend towards adding light effects to various props and costume pieces. I remember ordering some EL Wire from Amazon, reading up on how to trim and install it, and thinking it was pretty slick stuff. That's how I managed finishing Zed from League of Legends back in 2014! Now I've started wiring my own electronics and have picked up some light reading on programming Arduino and Raspberry Pi to do some truly amazing light work. I also have had the opportunity to teach a few LED basics classes for those peeps who want...

Proptober Day 24 - Create a Tutorial
Jennifer Belgin

On the 9th day of Proptober I asked you to find a tutorial for a new skill and share it with others. Today I am challenging you to make a tutorial of your own! It can be photos, text, a quick snippet, or a fully edited video. If you've already made one, feel free to share that instead. So much of what I have learned over the years has been splicing together techniques I've picked up from other makers and blending them with my own, so the value of these tutorials is really priceless. I've included a video and text-based...

Proptober Day 23 - Sculpt
Jennifer Belgin

While many people are now using 3D printers to make quickly reproducible pieces, not everyone has a printer or knows how to model. It's also relatively expensive to hire someone to do either for you. Sometimes you just have to make what you need to finish a piece and sculpting is really the best way to do so. There's also something to be said for digging your fingers into Monster Clay or Sculpey and bringing something to life! It's not always about making an entire piece, either. I use Apoxie Sculpt on a regular basis to fill gaps or finish pieces...

Proptober Day 22 - Product Photo
Jennifer Belgin

In a world where imagery rules social media it's not surprising that quality photos can have a huge impact on product sales or the reach of your item share. I personally have seen a substantial impact on my daily site visits and sales when I combine interesting photos with the right hashtags. So today's challenge is to practice doing some "product photos" for something you've made. Think about lighting, backgrounds, text, and anything else you may need to add to make something buyable or shareable. I don't have the means to hire a professional or use a professional camera to...
