Proptober Day 30 - Carving
Jennifer Belgin

Sometimes your project is in need of details and carving or etching is just the thing to finish it properly. Given that it's the day before Halloween, doing this to a pumpkin seemed apropos! My original plan was to do this on one of reusable craft pumpkins but we got a great deal on a sizeable pumpkin at Aldi so I'll be elbow deep in it's guts tonight! Below you'll also find a few videos and instructables on carving other common prop mediums.

Proptober Day 29 - Wood
Jennifer Belgin

Oftentimes we tend to get very comfortable in a particular material niche, be it thermoplastics, fabric, resin, or whatever. One of my goals for Proptober was to try and get people working with materials that are out of their comfort zone and I'd argue that wood is not one of the more common materials used in prop fabrication. However, there are many makers out there that really excel with this material. WoodChuck makes amazing replica weapons and there are any number of others who use wood in their builds.   For today I'm going to enable you to make your...

Proptober Day 27 - Foam
Jennifer Belgin

Foam! Foam! Foam! If you have not played around with this amazing material here's your chance. Foam is so incredibly affordable and you can make just about anything with it. It would take me days to even begin to scratch the surface of the tutorials dedicated to foam craft, but I feel you're cheating yourself if you don't give it a try at some point. If you are looking for some solid instruction, I can't recommend Punished Props highly enough. Their Foamsmith Trilogy is my go to, and their tutorials are top notch. My first "Wow!" foam moment was with...

Proptober Day 26 - Wire
Jennifer Belgin

I really enjoyed Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them despite the very different feel from the other Potter films and it was hard not to fall a little bit in love with the shy and sweet Bowtruckle. I was gifted an amazing hand-made version at DragonCon this year so it seems a great project for the "wire" portion of Proptober.

Proptober Day 25 - Light It Up
Jennifer Belgin

A few years back there was a trend towards adding light effects to various props and costume pieces. I remember ordering some EL Wire from Amazon, reading up on how to trim and install it, and thinking it was pretty slick stuff. That's how I managed finishing Zed from League of Legends back in 2014! Now I've started wiring my own electronics and have picked up some light reading on programming Arduino and Raspberry Pi to do some truly amazing light work. I also have had the opportunity to teach a few LED basics classes for those peeps who want...
