Tracey: When you can’t run, you crawl. And when you can’t crawl, when you can’t do that…
Zoe: … you find someone to carry you.
When Firefly first aired in 2002, I hadn't jumped on the Whedon bandwagon. I remember thinking, "Space cowboys? Whatever." and never gave the show a second thought. Then about a decade ago, after I had gotten caught up on Buffy and Angel, a friend asked what I thought of Firefly and was disgusted to know I'd yet to watch it. He handed me the boxed set and said, "Don't give this back until you've seen it all." I think he was wholeheartedly surprised when I returned it two days later, having binge-watched the entire series after work.
I imagine my thoughts were similar to many who've seen it. WHY DID THEY CANCEL THIS? How do we get it back? Will Mal and Inara get together? Does Jayne manage to keep his head? Does River figure out how to kill people with her brain? I bet Wash and Zoe would have 10 kids, and Wash would totally be a stay at home dad. Do Simon and Kaylee make it? Not to mention a million others I've speculated about the hundreds of times I've now watched this amazing series.
I've costumed with friends as Zoe. I've worn Jayne's hat and made my own version of Mudders Milk. I can't tell you how many times I've sung "The Hero of Canton" in an elevator with con-goers or quoted any of the dozens of amazing lines. I guess what I'm trying to say is, this show has been woven into the very fabric of my life in more ways than I ever realized. If you haven't watched it, what in the gorram verse are you waiting for?
